The fallout from the smoking bullet that wrecked Danish Prime Minister Birgitte Nyborg's political life, and almost shattered her family one, continues with the opening episode of the charged, dramatic new third and final season of the hit series, starting on BBC 4 next Saturday in double bills at 9pm.
Some of her long-time friends and compatriots in her work life had become enemies, whist her rivals had only gotten worse, building and strengthening their power bases and allegiances, when her good intentions running the country and striving to help its people prosper and thrive seemingly backfired on her last series, of which this new run starts two and a bit years on from that prior bold bid for re-election, with her actually having left office and her political career after being surprisingly defeated. Entering the business world and stabilising what's left of her personal and family life with her two children become her main goals- and Birgitte now has a new man in her life, a British architect (played by Alastair McKenzie) to add a little bit of fizz. But it isn't long before she decides to re-enter the long game, unhappy with the current state of the party she had given up so much for, determined to be leader again-this time of her own political party instead, with the help of some old friends, and facing up to old and new ramifications from her decisions, for a concluding set of memorable final episodes...

As ever, series lead Sidse Babett Knudsen brings a natural warm style to her performance, alongside a strong sense of honour and determination as both a hard working politician and as a protective mother, not just to her two children but also, in many ways, to her country. And there's that intriguing and playful aura here and there about her, too: some genuine mature sex appeal. The series dense plotting from series creator Adam Price and his team continues to explore lots of controversial topics whilst also happily serving well-balanced portions for the series other main characters, including journalist/reporter Katrine Fonsmark (Birgitte Hjort Sorenson) and her now former partner Kasper Jull (Pilou Asback), previously Birgitte's spirited spin-doctor, now in charge of his own communications company and a rising TV star, plus a challenging new political threat in the form of Jens Jacob Tychsen as Moderate Party leader Jacob Kruse.

Still one of the best dramas made for television in the last five years, BORGEN's ending is sad but its cast and crew clearly know when to go out on top. It's been a wonderful, more realist continuance of the kind of drama and morale dilemmas previously seen with THE WEST WING-further relatable and boundary pushing in some ways with its European setting and cast of likable, yet also fallible, characters.
