Mad Monster Party: Jules Bass

Do you remember those claymation movies that are shown over and over again at Christmas time? You know, the ones about Rudolph, Frosty, and the Little Drummer Boy? Did you know that the people that made those films once made a horror movie? Well...not a horror film exactly...but it does stare all of the big name monsters! Mad Monster Party follows a party thrown by Baron von Frankenstein upon the announcement of his retirement. As the head of the monsters, he must choose a successor. So he chooses his nephew Felix Flankin, a clumsy pharmacist, to take his place. Wacky hijinks ensue once he shows up to Frankenstein's island and he runs into Dracula, the Mummy, the Invisible Man, the Creature from the Black Lagoon, the Werewolf, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and the Hunchback of Notre Dame. This movie has not aged well. The claymation is jerky and spotty, the voice cast sounds largely bored, and the plot is full of random song and dance numbers that serve purely as filler. But it has the certain irresistible charm that makes the Christmas movies so endearing. This film is probably the best way to introduce young children to the famous Hollywood monsters. Anyone else will find it a bit tedious.
