So, London fashion week.....what went down? Let's begin with Henry Holland. I am not normally a fan of Holland's catwalk shows. I find his styling style a bit....over done. Normally it is not until I see the pieces in photo shoots that I find items from the collection that I like. But I have to say that I found his SS11 VERY refreshing in that respect.
Gone are the overloaded models. Dripping with jewelry, text speak nails, headscarves and bags and a new more grown up Holland styling emerged. One in which we were allowed to focus on the clothing. Each Holland show is always reported on in terms of accessories. Last season it was his text speak nails (nails with the words -LOL or WTF printed on them) which made all the glossies...
and in the world of fashion shows and exposure, the glossies reporting on shows is EVERYTHING.
So what did Mr Holland have for us this season?
It started simply last season. Maxi dresses became streamlined and structured. Gone were the flouncy layers of fabrics drowning the body. A new 90's influenced maxi dresses was born. Fitting the body and showing off curves. Teamed with a grunge style sweater for this season. The maxi is exposed again for SS11 and as always covered in prints. Why can very few designers show a maxi dress without a print on it??????!!!!Holland seemed to be having fun with shapes this season. Adding pleated sleeves and skirts to items. Following the body or draping in different ways. It is the first Holland show were there was a real departure from street style into a more 'grown up' feel. Maybe it's the influence from last season. (I found HH a bit young in amongst all the designers showing collection of camel and mad men inspired older styles) So perhaps Holland is simply reflecting a general style reflecting in a lot of collections for this and next season. A general 'feel' amongst stylists and designers. Note the blue shade popping up again. Totally the color for next season!
Again pleated skirts. But I have to admit that I love this. I love the skirt. the blouse not so much. But I love the metallic blue shade. Not sure how you could make an outfit out of such a bling skirt, I'm sure there is a way though....
Holland also featured a lot of fringing. Which I really hated. A few designers added horrible bits of fringing or drapery onto the ends of skirts this season. To me it seems odd and uncomfortable. Not to mention, how annoyed would you be with the fringing tickling the backs of your legs every five minutes? Or things getting caught on the fringing in pubs? What I do love is the cropped metallic biker jacket. How cool? The only thing is, it's a bit Topshop. In fact I have one in black that I bought there about 3 years ago.
The above shirt is completely dividing me. I love the pleated sleeves and the shape of. But for some reason the structured part of the shirt against the flowing sleeves makes me a bit uneasy. Maybe I need to see the shirt with a less buttoned up effect. Let the collar loosen up a bit. Right now it looks a bit awkward. Notice that it's a nearly all blue collection as well! Also the high waisted belted shorts make an appearance again.
The skirt as featured above. Just in another color. Fun and flirty and a bit more wearable in this shade. It could be recycled again for AW11.
I love the jumper. In the way that I am loving all jumpers right now. The trousers are single handedly the most disgusting print I have seen in a long time. I may have written that Holland is refreshingly moving into a more grown up sense of styling. But it will be a long time before he leaves all those mistakes which scream 'FASHION GRADUATE SHOW!' behind him. I just think these are horrible. Like a bad 70's rehash. Reworked with a more '2011' color scheme. Sorry Holland. But no.
I love this. What a simple but beautiful skirt. Such a departure from the garish print above. It's wonderful. A timeless classic piece which could be worn again and again. I even love the choice of shirt.
Just when you thought you were safe from the star print trouser disaster. Along comes - the playsuit. Never one to wasted fabric. After all, we are in a recession. Holland has knocked out a few playsuits for us as well. A bit ABBA circa 70-something is it not? It looks a little like a romper suit gone rogue! I would be interested to see the bags though. I think a print like this would perhaps be better suited to an accessory. I can't see the Irish market wearing this playsuit - in saying that, we can't buy his stuff over here yet so it's maybe a blessing!
I am not sure what to write about the above piece apart from the earrings because that's all I can see. I know plenty of first year fashion students who have spent nights constructing pompom after pompom while drinking coffee and smoking fags at 4 in the morning in front of the telly. Sewing each onto their various designs. It's a little bit.......silly looking. And again it's a remind of the older Holland shows. Where it was all a little bit too much.
SO.....WHAT DID WE THINK? 3/10. I am very curious to see what the pieces look like on their own. As that's normally how I come to love a Holland piece. However I am impressed with the gentler styling and less is more approach. May that be a road he continues down. As I said, interested to see next season as this one is too much of a mess for me to be impressed with. Sorry love. Although keep up the twittering - it's always entertaining!
SO....WHAT'S ON TREND?
