Someone who has judged others for their charisma, uniqueness, nerve and talent certainly has high expectations to meet. Right?
Luckily, independent artist and YouTube sensation Todrick Hall effortlessly checks all boxes as he preps for his upcoming project of original material. His first since 2016s mind-blowing Straight Outta Oz visual album.
To promote Forbidden, an astonishing 30-track album out next week, the former American Idol contestant flees the Emerald City to rejoin RuPaul on the neon-lit dancefloor for lead single "Dem Beats", an energetic and sassy club track. Encouraging listeners to live in the moment and become empowered by the bass pouring from the speakers, the new effort incorporates an infectious beat to seduce, entice and mobilize. Let inhibitions run rampant.
“Dem Beats” bolts out of the gate in a quick sprint and refuses to let up on the pace and energy once throughout. As Hall expresses disappointment in the lack of originality with today’s mainstream hits, he remains determined to be the one to save the dancefloor from potential boredom. RuPaul lends his flow skills and contagious laughter to play the role of commander-in-chief, demanding that both the beat and cakes drop until the sun rises.
With an extra dose of confidence in his step, Hall acknowledges his earned-cockiness when letting loose in the club. However, as the track progresses and the bridge rolls around, the true endearing motive is revealed. “Tonight, we 'bout to bring out the freaks, glitter all over our feet, we want the speakers to bleed, yea yea yea, tonight, we be who we wanna be,” the artist belts, reclaiming the floor as a safe space for one to be comfortable with their true self.
As expected, not only did Todrick share a new single, but the artist premiered a glitter extravaganza of an accompanying music video as part of a full visual album experience. Emerging as a polished and regal unicorn, Todrick allows “Dem Beats” to flourish in its natural environment: a crowded, dim, ravenous club party where the artist is able to strut his stuff and showcase more than just his vocal talents. Mama Ru may dictate the vibe as the night’s DJ, however it’s apparent, Todrick brings the attitude and fun.
Along with the previously released “Ordinary Day”, the upcoming project is shaping up to be a juxtaposition of genre influences and internal motivation. While the political atmosphere made an impact on Todrick, the carefree and vibrant “Dem Beats” highlights the idea of pushing all troubles and conflicts to the side for a brief moment and rejoice as a community. Todrick’s creativity has always shone through, he’s just simply raising the stakes a bit more. All to entertain.
Just don’t kill his vibe. Don’t touch his weave!
